Kirchberg, business district, residential area, and more

The Kirchberg (Kierchbierg) district is a vast plateau located northeast of Luxembourg City. It is one of the 24 districts of the Luxembourg capital.

The Kirchberg district is adjacent to the districts of Weimerskirch, Neudorf/Weimershof, and Clausen.

Overview of the Kirchberg district

Divided in two by Avenue John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Kirchberg is the modern financial district of Luxembourg City. It is characterized by its contemporary architecture and prestigious infrastructure.

It is home to European institutions, numerous banks, and international companies.

But beyond its image as a business district, Kirchberg is also a mixed neighborhood with residential, cultural, and recreational facilities. Kirchberg offers residential areas and shops, as well as Luxembourg primary schools and international schools.

You will also find cultural venues such as the Philharmonie and the Museum of Modern Art (Mudam).

Its accessibility is enhanced by the tramway and major roads.

Nevertheless , the district has many advantages due to its continuous development, with new projects aimed at balancing professional and residential life. However, its atmosphere can seem colder and more functional outside of business hours in the business part of the district.

The history of the Kirchberg district

An agricultural area until the mid-20th century, the Kirchberg district is now a hub of activity thanks to its strong economy. It is one of the most important districts in the Luxembourg capital.

The Kirchberg plateau was transformed withthe arrival of European institutions in the 1950s and 1960s. Its fields and agricultural land disappeared to make way for large buildings. The district then underwent rapid development in the 1980s with the growth of financial activities in Luxembourg.

In recent years, the Kirchberg Fund has been promoting the rebalancing of the district with the construction of numerous residential buildings.

Population in the Kirchberg district of Luxembourg

The Kirchberg district has been developing very rapidly in recent years with the construction of new residential areas. Today, it is the district with the highest number of foreigners afterthe Gare district. It mainly attracts a population of young executives working in the sector.

European Union and business in Luxembourg

With a business atmosphere during the day, the northern and southern parts of Avenue Kennedy are dedicated to European institutions and business.

Large modern buildings, true architectural showcases, line Avenue John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

Coming from the center of Luxembourg, you will find the Towers of Europe, which house the European institutions. It is important to note that Luxembourg is a founding member of the European Union and plays an active role in European institutions:

  • Council of the European Union or Council of Ministers: it usually meets in Brussels, but the April, June, and October sessions are held in Luxembourg
  • Court of Justice and Court of First Instance of the European Union: Luxembourg has been the judicial capital of Europe since 1952.
  • European Court of Auditors
  • European Investment Bank and European Investment Fund
  • General Secretariat of the European Parliament
  • Eurostat and Publications Office ( Jean Monnet building)

Further along Avenue Kennedy, heading towards Rond Point Serra, you will find the major banks and financial companies, audit and law firms, and other prestigious names in the Luxembourg economy, as well as other international companies. Kirchberg is considered to be the equivalent of London's City.

Architecture lovers will delight in the facades of the institutional buildings with their rich and varied architecture: Deutsche Bank, KPMG, Court of Justice, EIB, etc.

Kirchberg, a cultural district in Luxembourg

Philharmonic Hall and Philharmonic Orchestra

You can't help but admire the magnificent Philharmonie building, or Grande-Duchesse Joséphine-Charlotte Concert Hall, designed by the famous architect Christian de Portzamparc, who has created numerous buildings in Europe and elsewhere. Guided toursallow you to admire the rows of columns, the various concert halls, and even take a walk behind the scenes and on the stage of the Grand Auditorium. A wonderful experience for the whole family.

The Philharmonie de Luxembourg has three halls to welcome music lovers and enthusiasts. The Grand Auditorium, with its extraordinary architecture and design, can seat 1,500 people. The Chamber Music Hall offers 300 seats for more intimate concerts. The 180-seat Discovery Space hosts concerts for children and musical projects.

All of the halls offer incomparable acoustics. A music concert in the Grand Auditorium with the philharmonic orchestra's choirs is an extraordinary experience.

But Avenue Kennedy is also home to many leisure and cultural activities.

Leisure and culture in the Kirchberg district

Next to the Philharmonie, the Mudam – Musée d'art moderne Grand Duc Jean, backing onto the old fortress of Luxembourg, was designed byarchitect Ieoh Ming Pei (1917-2019).

The Mudam presents the finest collections of contemporary art. The Fortress Museum, with the Drai Eechelen Museum and Fort Thungen, completes the cultural offering on this side of the avenue.

Opposite Avenue Kennedy, the LuxExpo Exhibition Center regularly hosts events. You can stroll through its aisles to visit the famous Festival of Migrations or the European Contemporary Art Fair Art3f.

Kirchberg is also home to numerous works of art and sculptures, including the birdcage by Luxembourg artist Su-Mei Tse, the monumental sculpture "Exchange" by American sculptor Richard Serra, the "Grande fleur qui marche" (Big Walking Flower) by Giovanni Teconi, and the "Lange Bänker" (Tall Banker), which depicts an austere banker.

The LUGA 2025 exhibition hosts a large exhibition of urban gardens in the district.

Kirchberg, a residential district in Luxembourg

In addition to the old Kirchberg district, which has retained its "village" atmosphere, the district is undergoing change and now offers a wide range of residential accommodation.

Avenue Adenauer and its surroundings are the scene of major construction projects for residential housing, which will rebalance the district. Kirchberg is now a truly mixed district with many amenities.

Several major real estate projects are expected to be completed there in the coming years.

Amenities in the Kirchberg district

The Kirchberg Hospital and the Bohler Clinic are significant assets to the neighborhood. Located at the entrance to the neighborhood, near the Serra Roundabout and the A1 motorway exit, they offer high-quality medical facilities.

Schools and childcare facilities in Kirchberg

Residents of the Kirchberg district in Luxembourg also benefit from the presence of several elementary schools, a school center, and several nurseries.

Kirchberg is also home tothe European School. The Sainte Sophie private school is also nearby in the Weimershof neighborhood . One of the campuses of the University of Luxembourg is also located in this area.
See the education/training section for more information on schools and school systems in Luxembourg.

Transport in Kirchberg

The Kirchberg district is particularly well connected.

The Serra roundabout in Kirchberg is an important gateway to the city of Luxembourg, with a major transport hub. Directly connected to the A1 motorway towards Germany, you can reach the and Luxembourg city center via the Pont Rouge Grande-Duchesse Charlotte bridge.

If desired, the P+R Gernsbach and Findel Airport car parks welcome cross-border workers, who can leave their vehicles there and continue their journey using more sustainable modes of transport. Several bus lines serve the city center via Avenue Adenauer. A Vél'Oh station and an MBox also offer the possibility of continuing your journey by bike. There is also a pleasant bike path connecting this neighborhood to Senningerberg in the municipality of Niederanven.

Connected to the funicular, the tram serves the enclosed district of Pfaffenthal, below Kirchberg. It then joins the historic center of Ville-Haute and the central train station. The tram then continues on to the southern districts of Cloche d'Or, Luxembourg's new business center . In the other direction, the tram connects Kirchberg with the LuxExpo exhibition center and Findel International Airport.

Shops in Kirchberg

To the north of Kirchberg, the Auchan shopping center offers a 12,500 m² hypermarket on two floors with free covered parking for two hours, a shopping mall with 50 stores, and 19 restaurants. On the other side, the Infinity real estate project has brought new commercial spaces opposite the Philharmonie concert hall.

Leisure in Kirchberg

In addition tothe Mudam modern art museum and the Philharmonie concert hall, Kirchberg is also known for its leisure facilities, such as the large La Coque sports complex with its swimming pool and climbing wall, and the Kinepolis multiplex cinema.

A large green space behind La Coque allows visitors to enjoy the cool air in summer, with a restaurant area open in good weather, "Le Kiosk," known for its famous " Flammekuechen. "

The LuxExpo exhibition center welcomes thousands of visitors every year for its various exhibitions and trade shows. It is also the start and finish point of the famous ING Night Marathon, the biggest sporting event in Luxembourg.

Quality of life in Kirchberg

Separated from the historic center of Luxembourg by the Grande Duchesse Charlotte or Pont Rouge bridge, Kirchberg has many attractions. Nevertheless, we are hoping for more pedestrian areas with a real neighborhood feel. Local services are currently mainly concentrated on Avenue JF Kennedy, to the detriment of the more residential neighborhoods.

However, the aim is to rebalance the ratio between housing and offices in order to give this neighborhood a little more humanity.

As a result, more than 25,000 residents are expected in the long term, compared to less than 5,700 residents in 2017. The working population is also expected to increase significantly, as reflected in the magnificent Arcelor Mittal headquarters currently under construction in the European district. 12,000 people worked in Kirchberg in 2020. This figure is expected to rise to 40,000 in 2025 and more than 66,000 in 2040.

Developments in the Kirchberg district

A number of new districts are being developed in the Kirchberg area: Kiem (820 homes), Réimerwee (480 homes), Grünwald, and Kennedy Sud.
The Op der Schleed project north of Boulevard Adenauer is expected to see the construction of nearly 4,800 homes, providing space for more than 10,000 additional residents within 30 years.

In addition, the Kirchberg fund responsible for managing the district has commissioned an architectural firm to redesign the public spaces. The aim is to give this district, which is considered too cold and impersonal, a more human touch. The residents of the Kiem district are calling for more meeting places to encourage interaction in this new district .

Shops are to be added to the ground floors of buildings, and street furniture is to be installed to encourage people to stop and linger. Traffic routes are to include more lanes for pedestrians and cyclists. A footbridge will connect the city center above the Neudorf neighborhood in the valley.
