The Beggen district is one of the 24 districts that make up the city of Luxembourg. It is located in the north of the city between the districts of Dommeldange, Eich, and Mühlenbach.

Luxembourgers make up around one third of Beggen's population. The French community, the largest foreign community, represents 12% of the population, while Portuguese nationals represent 10%.

Environment of the Beggen district in Luxembourg

With theEich neighborhood to the south, Dommeldange to the east, and Mühlenbach to the west, the Beggen neighborhood is organized around a main thoroughfare, Rue de Beggen. It connects the capital of Luxembourg to the municipality of Walferdange.

Originally, in the 17th century, the Beggen district was a tiny hamlet of seven households. It was thanks to industrialization and the need for labor in the country that this district began to develop at the end of the 19th century.

The Beggen church was built in 1965. Its imposing bell tower is the emblem of this district, surrounded by the Alzette River and the railway line.

Beggen Castle now houses the Russian Embassy. It has regularly attracted protesters since the start of the war in Ukraine.

Today, the Beggen area is mainly inhabited by a foreign community. It consists of a main thoroughfare with numerous shops and shopping centers. Its small perpendicular streets, which are more residential, feature detached houses with gardens.

Beggen is a green oasis close to the city. It has attractive walking and cycling paths in the green areas of Eecherfeld and Mont Dommeldange.

Many shops and services are located on Beggen's main street.

Here you will find the small Shopping Center Espace with an Aldi supermarket , an Action store, and a few other shops. A little further away, a Cactus supermarket and a few other shops also welcome customers.

Schools and childcare

There is a primary school and an after-school care center in Beggen. Several nurseries cater for babies and children under 4, one of which uses the Montessori method. The Lycée Technique Emile Metz technical college is also located here.

Outings and leisure activities in Beggen

The Espace shopping center also offers music and dance classes, a sports club, and more. It's very convenient for shopping while the children are doing their extracurricular activities.

Several playgrounds offer young children an ideal setting for fun. The new Wichtelcher playground, with its folkloric gnome theme, features obstacle courses, climbing walls, huts for playing hide-and-seek, swings, and slides. It is located on Rue Henri Dunant, where you will also find a stadium, a sports hall, a soccer field, tennis courts, and a cultural center.

Rue de Beggen is a major road linking Luxembourg City with the municipalities in northern Luxembourg via Walferdange. Several bus lines servethis neighborhood.

A wastewater treatment plant is located on Rue du Pont in Béreldange.

Living in the Beggen neighborhood of Luxembourg

At first glance, Beggen seems like a transit neighborhood between the center of Luxembourg and northern towns such as Walferdange and Béreldange. However , Beggen is known as a pleasant place to live.

Beggen is a family-friendly neighborhood, attractive thanks to its many shops and reasonable prices.

However, residents would like to see more facilities for young people.

Although the main thoroughfare of Rue de Beggen is very busy, good public transport links make it a neighborhood that is very well connected to other parts of Luxembourg.

In addition, the surrounding countryside is easily accessible for family outings. The houses along the Alzette River are popular with families attracted by a quiet neighborhood between the city and nature.
