The Hamm Neighborhood in Luxembourg
Located east of Luxembourg City, the Hamm neighborhood covers an area of 4 km². It borders the neighborhoods of Cents, Bonnevoie, and Pulvermühl.
Hamm is a quiet, predominantly residential neighborhood located east of Luxembourg City. Historically known for its American military cemetery, it retains a peaceful atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of downtown.
Its green surroundings and village-like atmosphere make it a popular choice for families and those seeking a quiet environment. Although somewhat off the beaten path, it remains well-connected thanks to public transportation and its proximity to major roadways.
Real estate development here remains moderate, preserving its residential character while benefiting from a strategic proximity to business districts and the city center.
Be aware, however, of aircraft noise as planes fly over the neighborhood upon arrival at or departure from Findel Airport.

The largest foreign community in the Hamm neighborhood is the Portuguese community. It accounts for 14.7% of residents.
Hamm: From Industrial to Residential Neighborhood
The origins of the Hamm neighborhood in Luxembourg
The origins of the Hamm neighborhood date back to the construction of a monastery in the 14th century. Subsequently , like many neighborhoods in the city of Luxembourg, Hamm developed primarily with the industrialization of the 19th century. The Godchaux Company established itself there around 1840 by purchasing the Hamm mills. The Cloth and Knitwear Factory was set up in Schleifmühle. It was the first industry in Luxembourg to use steam power in its manufacturing process. Up to 800 employees worked here. The factory closed in 1939.
Today, the site can be visited by following the lovely, marked Godchaux trail.
Two business parks are located in the Hamm neighborhood: the Hamm Industrial Park and the Mac Adam Business Park below it.
Hamm Residential District
Today, the neighborhood is primarily residential. Many of the houses in Hamm date back to the 19th century.
Originally part of the municipality of Sandweiler until 1920 , the Hamm neighborhood is closely linked to the Cents neighborhood.

Hamm lacks shops, which can be a drawback. The famous artisan confectioner Namur has opened a modern and welcoming restaurant in Hamm. It’s a great place to enjoy local specialties.

St. George’s International School, which offers a British education, is also located in the Hamm neighborhood.
Transportation in the Hamm neighborhood
Bus lines 15, 25, and 29 serve the Hamm neighborhood, with 19 bus stops.
With the Cents-Hamm train station, this neighborhood is well-connected.
From the Hamm neighborhood, you can quickly reach the A1 highway and Findel Airport via the Irrgarten roundabout, or Luxembourg Central Station.
Recreational Activities in Hamm
The Hamm neighborhood is also home to several sports facilities. The neighborhood’ s a multi-purpose sports hall, a weight room, a soccer field, the Hans Sowa Stadium, and a kayaking club.
The City of Luxembourg is also planning to build a new sports complex featuring a large sports hall and a weightlifting room. An athletics stadium and a large park will complete this project, which is expected to be finished in 2029.
Several playgrounds are available for children.
Visitors can also enjoy the beautiful Hamm Forest, where there are numerous marked trails to explore.

Be aware of airplane noise, however! Hamm is located along the flight path of the nearby Findel Airport. The neighborhood suffers from noise pollution from planes flying over the area during takeoff and landing.
Residents are calling for more cultural activities, community gardens, and the preservation of historical heritage. They are also asking for more local shops and the development of sustainable transportation options.
