Receiving treatment in hospital: admissions

In Luxembourg, hospital services are of high quality. The nursing staff are competent and speak several languages. The facilities are modern and well equipped. The safety of patients receiving care is one of the key priorities of Luxembourg's hospital system.

Emergency services in Luxembourg

In the event of a medical or life-threatening emergency, it is recommended that you first call the European emergency number 112. Depending on the patient's needs, the operator

  • will send the appropriate emergency services
  • direct you to the nearest hospital on duty
  • give you appropriate advice on how to deal with the emergency.

If it is not a medical emergency and it is not during night hours, consult a doctor or a medical center before going to the emergency room.

Languages used in hospital services

Luxembourg has three official languages: Luxembourgish, French, and German. The country's healthcare professionals and hospital staff speak at least one of these languages. English is also widely spoken. It is therefore very easy to make yourself understood as a foreigner arriving in Luxembourg.

Admissions to Luxembourg hospitals

In Luxembourg, you can go to the hospital for a medical examination, a simple consultation, a scheduled hospitalization, or in case of an emergency.

For your admission, including for a scheduled appointment, you will need to go to the reception desk of the relevant department with proof of identity andproof of your insurance and any supplementary insurance. If you do not have health insurance, you will be asked to pay a deposit. You will receive the final bill by mail at a later date.

If you have any medical records or prescriptions, it is also useful to bring them with you when you are admitted.

Admission of a minor is subject to the authorization of the person with parental authority.

In the event of emergency admission, these administrative procedures may be completed at a later date.

Payment and reimbursement of hospital care

Hospitalization and medical treatment can be expensive in Luxembourg. It is therefore important to have valid health insurance coverage, either through your employer or a private policy. This will help cover the costs of your hospitalization and medical treatment.

In the case of outpatient care, the patient will pay the doctor directly upon discharge or by sending the bill to their home address. The patient must then send their claim for reimbursement to their health insurance fund.

In the case of hospitalization, the costs of the stay are generally paid by the CNS (third-party payment). However, the insured person must pay the daily contribution directly for those over 18 years of age.

In addition, supplements for a higher quality room are not covered by health insurance. The insured person must therefore have taken out supplementary health insurance in advance . Here we explain why.

For cross-border workers, please refer to the CNS procedures.

Visiting a patient in hospital, clinic, or maternity ward

Visitors are generally allowed in Luxembourg hospitals, but there may be restrictions. This was particularly the case during the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, there may be other reasons for prohibiting outside visitors to hospitalized patients. Check with the hospital services in advance and follow the guidelines or protocols in place.

Visiting hours for patients or sick people are strictly defined. Visitors must comply with these in order to allow patients to rest and healthcare staff to do their work. Visits are generally only allowed in the afternoons. Check directly with the hospital beforehand.

Which hospital should you go to for treatment in Luxembourg?

Luxembourg has several hospitals, both public and private. In general, public hospitals offer high-quality care, and emergency services are available in all hospitals.
