Health insurance in Luxembourg

If you live in Luxembourg, you must have health insurance. Health insurance is mandatory for Luxembourg residents. Employers automatically register their employees with the Joint Social Security Center. Learn more about the health insurance system.

Most residents are covered by the national health insurance scheme, which is financed by social security contributions.Cross-border workers also benefit from the Luxembourg healthcare system, with a few specific features.

If you are not covered by the national health insurance scheme, you will need to take out private health insurance.

Cost of healthcare consultations in Luxembourg

The cost of a medical consultation in Luxembourg varies depending on the doctor and the type of consultation. A consultation with a general practitioner costs €57.70 as of September 1, 2023.

The rate is indexed in the same way as incomes and salaries.

The cost of consultations is set by a nomenclature of the National Health Fund, which determines the reimbursement of healthcare costs on this basis.

The basic rates for healthcare professionals in Luxembourg are as follows in 2025

  • emergency room consultation during the day: from €63.30, at night: from €102.10

Making a medical appointment with a doctor in Luxembourg

If you fall ill and need to see a doctor, it is advisable to visit a general practitioner first. If necessary, they will advise you to see a specialist and will write a referral.

As a reminder, it is mandatory to provide a medical certificate prescribed by a doctor in the eventof sick leave from the third day of absence as an employee.

To see a doctor in Luxembourg, you usually need to make an appointment in advance. You can either call the doctor's office or make an appointment online, depending on the doctor's preference.

Some doctors may also offer walk-in consultations. However, it is best to check in advance. Since Covid, many doctors only see patients by appointment.

How do I make an appointment or find a doctor?

To easily find a doctor or dentist, consult the official register of doctors practicing in Luxembourg on the Medical College website.

To make an appointment, you can call the practitioner's office directly. Some doctors are also listed in online medical platform directories such as Doctena.lu.

You can make an appointment directly online at the dates and times when the practitioners are available. Some doctors also offer video consultations. Remote consultations have become more common in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Please note that if you cancel your medical appointment less than 24 hours in advance, some practitioners will still charge you for the consultation. This is also the case if you do not show up for your appointment.

Doctors are also authorized to administer vaccinations.

On-call doctors in Luxembourg

Do you need to see a doctor during the night or at the weekend? Is your usual doctor's office closed and you need medical advice or a consultation?

Doctors and dentists only see patients during weekday business hours. There are no on-call doctors in Luxembourg.

Medical centers provide a replacement service for general practitioners for nighttime, weekend, and holiday care when doctors' offices are closed.

Medical centers, evening and weekend medical services

Medical centers offer evening and weekend medical services at certain times. Please note that medical centers are not emergency services!

There are three medical centers in Luxembourg:

  • Medical center on call for the center of the country located in Luxembourg: 23 Val Fleuri, L-1526 Luxembourg. Patients are seen without an appointment.
  • Medical center on call for the north, located in Ettelbruck: 110, av. Lucien Salentiny L-9080 Ettelbruck. You must make an appointment in advance via this website or by telephone (+352) 20 333 111. Appointments can be made from 7 p.m. on weekdays and from 7 a.m. on weekends and public holidays.
  • Medical center on call for the south, located in Esch/Alzette- Belval district: 3-5, avenue du Swing, L-4367 Belvaux (Esch-Belval). Patients are seen without an appointment.

Medical center opening hours:

  • Monday to Friday from 8 p.m. to midnight
  • Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 8 a.m. to midnight.

In the event of a medical emergency and if the medical centers are closed, you should call 112. A doctor will gather initial information. Depending on the situation, they will either make a house call or decide on emergency hospitalization.

Consulting specialist doctors in Luxembourg

It is relatively easy to get an appointment with a specialist in Luxembourg. However, waiting times vary depending on the specialty. Luxembourg is also experiencing a shortage of specialists.

In Luxembourg, you do not need a referral from a general practitioner to make an appointment with a specialist.

However, if you want your health insurance or supplementary health insurance to cover the medical costs incurred by your visit to a specialist , it is best to have a referral from a general practitioner. Find out in advance whether or not you need to obtain this referral.

Association Luxembourgeoise des Ostéopathes - ALDO

Osteopathy is based on the manual diagnosis and treatment of people suffering from functional disorders and physical pain, with the aim of restoring mobility and physical well-being.

Osteopathy is indicated for adults, children and infants.

More and more patients are turning to this profession to treat ailments and pathologies as diverse as physical pain. Some also turn to osteopathy for other problems, such as depression. Osteopaths treat adults, children and even infants.

To date, you don't need a doctor's prescription to consult an osteopath. Osteopathic sessions are not reimbursed by the CNS. However, an increasing number ofcomplementary insurance companies are reimbursing the cost of treatment. The fees charged by osteopaths are not fixed. Find out more in advance.

To work as an osteopath in Luxembourg, you need to have completed a Master's degree.

Association Luxembourgeoise des Kinésithérapeutes - ALK

As a patient, you are free to choose your practitioner, whether for therapeutic or wellness purposes. Physiotherapists work on a wide range of pathologies, whether muscular, respiratory, articular or other.

For physiotherapy treatment to be covered by your health insurance, the sessions must be prescribed in advance by a general practitioner. Please note that theprescription must be validated by the CNS, so ask when you book your appointment with the physiotherapist. The reimbursement rate is generally 70%, except in certain cases where it is 100%.

To work in Luxembourg as a self-employed or salaried physiotherapist, you must hold a state diploma attesting to your ability to work as a Masseur-Kinésithérapeute.

Association Luxembourgeoise des Orthophonistes (logopèdes) - ALO

Speech therapists are responsible for diagnosing and treating written and spoken language and expression difficulties in children and adults.

The most frequently encountered disorders are lisping, stuttering, speech delays or any other difficulty related to writing or oral expression.

There is a Logopedics Center in Strassen, under the supervision of the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth. Children with speech and expression disorders are cared for in this center, where they can receive a basic education in Luxembourg, and are reintegrated into the normal school system once the disorders have disappeared.

Psychological consultations in Luxembourg

Consultations with a psychologist or psychotherapist are now reimbursed by the CNS. You should also check with your complementary health insurance. Some cover part of the cost on presentation of a medical prescription.

Luxembourg Mental Health Center

As part of the Ligue Luxembourgeoise d'Hygiène mentale (D'Ligue), the Centre de Santé Mentale offers psychological and psychiatric consultations by appointment.
This free service is offered to adults suffering from psycho-social disorders, depression, personality disorders, anxiety attacks, etc., following trauma or otherwise. The aim is to keep patients in their usual environment, not to remove them from it by placing them in psychiatric centers. However, therapeutic housing can be made available.

Société Luxembourgeoise de Psychologie asbl

Over 300 psychologists and psychotherapists in Luxembourg. The Société Luxembourgeoise de Psychologie has been a member of the European Federation of Psychologists' Associations (EFPA) since 2001.

Psy-jeunes, a Red Cross service

The Psy-Jeunes service offered by the Luxembourg Red Cross provides psychological and psycho-therapeutic support for young people between the ages of 12 and 21.

Young people and their families will find support here in the form of consultations with psychologists and psychotherapists . Emotional and affective disorders, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, family problems, sexual abuse, behavioral or eating disorders... each of these symptoms or facts should not go unanswered.

By creating the Psy-Jeunes service, the Red Cross accompanies young people in distress, offering them psychological and psychotherapeutic follow-up. The help is practical and caring, aimed at improving mental health and long-term well-being.

Applications should be made either by calling 2755, or by contacting ONE - Office National de l'Enfance.

Since 2015, the profession of psychotherapist has been regulated in Luxembourg. It is now necessary to hold a master's-level diploma issued by theUniversity of Luxembourg.

In an emergency, the SOS Distress services of 454545.lu can also be contacted. They act as a preventive service, as do the associations and self-help groups you'll find here.

Audio-phonological service

The audio phonological service is part of the Luxembourg Ministry of Health. The aim of this service is to prevent, detect and treat hearing and language disorders in both children and adults.

It is vital to be able to detect hearing disorders in young children as early as possible, so that they can be treated more effectively. So be on the lookout if your child shows signs of ear pain or is unresponsive to noise, even when sleeping in a quiet environment. Similarly, the sounds your child produces should evolve with his age. Stay alert, and when in doubt, consult your doctor!

In Luxembourg, the prevention of hearing and language disorders is a major issue. It is estimated that around 60,000 people in Luxembourg suffer from hearing problems. For half of them, the disorder is actually incapacitating.

All audio-phonological consultations are free of charge, and newborn babies are screened from the earliest age. Children are also screened in Luxembourg's basic school classes at cycle 1.2 (age 5) for hearing disorders, and from the age of 2 and a half for possible language disorders.

Thereafter, support is provided for children and adults with speech, language and hearing disorders. Adults are also treated for all hearing disorders, including tinnitus.

Orthoptics department

The orthoptics service, located in Luxembourg Hamm and Esch-sur-Alzette, is a state-run service responsible for vision screening for children aged between 10 months and 4 years (up to cycle 1.2 of the Luxembourg school system). Orthoptic servicesare provided free of charge and on an optional basis.

Orthoptic consultations do not replace consultations with an ophthalmologist. In the event of a positive detection of a vision problem, the orthoptist will advise you to consult an ophthalmologist.

Addiction treatment in Luxembourg

It was with this in mind that a safer drug consumption room, or shooting gallery, was set up in Luxembourg, on Route de Thionville in the Bonnevoie district. The center is accessible free of charge.

The aim of the Abrigado center is to provide a clean and calm environment for adults with addictions. This daytime drug consumption center is intended for drug users who are not undergoing substitution treatment. Sterile injection equipment is provided to limit risks.

A team of professionals (psychologists, nurses, educators, etc.) is also on hand to support those who wish it. Emergency care can therefore be provided if necessary.

Practicing as a medical professional in Luxembourg

To practice in Luxembourg, medicalprofessionals must have the required skills to do so. Recognition of the original diploma is requested by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research.
