Train travel: everything you need to know

Luxembourg has a well-developed rail network, offering comfort and safety to passengers. Older trains are gradually being replaced by modern, air-conditioned trains. Here you will find all the information you need to plan your train journey in Luxembourg and beyond.

Traveling by train in Luxembourg

Railway stations and services

CFL passenger trains are an eco-friendly means of transport, powered by 100% renewable electricity with zero CO2 emissions. The network covers the entire country with regular services, efficiently connecting towns and villages to the capital Luxembourg and its central station.

The Mobiliteit.lu app gives travelers real-time access to train routes, stops, and schedules, making it easier for them to get around.

All train travel in Luxembourg is managed by the CFL, Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois.

Tickets and fares

Since February 2020, second-class public transport has been free in Luxembourg. First class remains subject to a fare, with prices adapted to the different needs of users:

  • Ticket valid for 2 hours (first class): €3
  • Book of ten tickets valid for 2 hours: €24
  • Ticket valid for 1 day (first class): €6
  • Monthly pass (first class): €60
  • Annual pass (first class): €500
  • Reduced fare for seniors: €200

Bus travel is free of charge throughout Luxembourg.

Cross-border travel, getting around the Greater Region

Getting around the Greater Region

Every day, thousands of cross-border workers take regional trains to Luxembourg City or other towns in the region to work.

Luxembourg and cross-border tickets can be purchasedvia the CFL app.

Traveling by train to France and Europe

From Luxembourg railway station, several regular train lines serve France, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands. Find out more at the ticket office or on the CFL website.

Luxembourg station also offers several daily TGV (high-speed) trains to France. You can reach Paris in 2 hours and 20 minutes from Luxembourg station or Montpellier in the south in 7 hours.

TGV and regular trains from Luxembourg also serve the TGV station in Metz. From this station, you can travel to other major French cities by direct TGV or via Paris, Lyon, etc.

The Lorraine TGV station, nearLorraine Airport, offers other direct TGV services to the following destinations: Strasbourg, Paris CDG Airport, Marne la Vallée (Disneyland), Le Mans, Angers, Nantes, Poitiers, Rennes, Bordeaux, etc.
Long-term outdoor parking is available.

From Luxembourg station (bus station), a shuttle bus serves Lorraine TGV station in less than 1.5 hours. Reservations for seats on the "Gare Lorraine TGV-Express" bus are mandatory and can be made at CFL stations. See www.cfl.lu.

Ticket reservations and passenger services

Purchasing train tickets and season tickets

First-class tickets must be purchased via the CFL app or at ticket machines in stations. Specific season tickets (annual, senior, and Studentepass) are only available via the CFL app.
CFL ticket offices no longer sell first-class tickets.

Annual passes are now only sold by neighboring countries' rail companies: Deutsche Bahn, SNCF, and SNCB.

mKaart, tickets

Since January 1, 2026, the mKaart card can no longer be used for train or bus tickets in Luxembourg.

Reservations and purchases of TGV tickets to France

Reservations are mandatory for TGV trains. You can purchase your TGV ticket at the ticket office at Luxembourg train station or order your ticket by phone from CFL. Your ticket will be sent to your home address by mail, along with all the information about your trip, within two business days of your order. Learn more about CFL.

You can also plan your trip and purchase your tickets on the SNCF website sncf-connect.com.

Reduced mobility and boarding at stations and on trains

Luxembourg's stations are equipped to accommodate people with reduced mobility, with easy access to platforms and adapted carriages.

Parking is available near stations to allow easy access to trains.

Connections

Connections with trams and buses ensure continuity of transport service. In addition,regular bus lines provide access to destinations not served by rail.

CFL ticket office opening hours

Given that transport is free of charge, only the largest stations have retained their CFL ticket offices.

Luxembourg CFL station ticket office opening hours

The central ticket offices at Luxembourg station are open from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, and from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.

The international transport ticket offices are open from 5:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Sunday and on public holidays. Telephone information services are available from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sundays and public holidays.

You will also find ticket machines where you can buy tickets outside these hours.

Belval-Université CFL station opening hours

On weekdays, the ticket offices at Belval Université station open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m. They are closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.

Esch-sur-Alzette CFL station opening hours

The ticket offices at the CFL station in Esch-sur-Alzette are open from 6:15 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.

CFL mobile app
