Carpooling in Luxembourg

The concept of carpooling

The concept of carpooling? Sharing the journey and the costs with other people who are going in the same direction as you, or even to the same destination.

Carpooling is a rapidly expanding mode of transport in Luxembourg. Little used a few years ago, carpooling is now gaining more and more followers. Especially at a time when gas prices are skyrocketing!

What are the advantages of carpooling? First and foremost, you reduce your individual gas and parking costs, whether on the street or in dedicated facilities. Another advantage is that it makes your commute more enjoyable, especially in traffic jams. It can be a great way to meet other people and build a professional network.

What's more, you 're helping to protect the environment! So why not take advantage of this opportunity to travel in an eco-friendly and sustainable way?

In fact, several carpooling websites have been developed in Luxembourg. Today, they are registering more and more users and, as a result, more and more routes are being offered.

Carpooling solutions in Luxembourg

Want to try this mode of transport? It's easy, as there are several carpooling websites available. Simply check the carpooling websites to see if there are any trips planned that match your destination.

Carpooling has been growing in Luxembourg since 2018 with the creation of the Copilote carpooling portal launched by the government.

The aim was to increase vehicle occupancy rates. A Luxmobil study conducted in 2017 found that the average vehicle occupancy rate was 1.2 people. This left around 250,000 empty seats available for travel in the Luxembourg capital every day. With a reduction in pollution and traffic jams, the principle is a winning one.

The Ministry also encourages companies to promote carpooling by providing users with parking spaces reserved for carpooling. As part of the launch of the project, companies were also asked to reimburse carpooling costs (€2 per trip for a maximum of two trips per day).

After joining the Klaxit app in 2019, the Luxembourg carpooling platform will join the BlablaCar Daily community and its more than 4 million carpoolers at the end of 2024.

How does BlablaCar work? Download the app for free. It is the most downloaded carpooling platform in Europe. Registration is free. The driver indicates the route, times, and price. Passengers then reserve their seat by paying online. This dynamic portal allows drivers and users to geolocate themselves. Both parties can also rate each other.

Other carpooling sites for your commute

  • Pendlerportal.de is a free carpooling platform offered by the Verkéiersverbond (transport community). The site is available in German.
  • mobilithi.fr is a site created by the city of Thionville in France.
  • mobicoop.fr is a cooperative site with no commission on carpooling trips. All you have to do is post an ad.
  • laroueverte.com

Car sharing or self-service cars

Car sharing is an alternative mode of transport that avoids the need to travel by bus or train. There are now several car sharing solutions available. Users can access a car only when they need it. This reduces the pollution and traffic caused by the surplus of cars in cities today.

Anyone with a valid driver's license can use car-sharing services. It's a great way to enjoy the benefits of a car without the drawbacks, especially since the prices are very affordable.

Flex, the car-sharing solution near train stations

Flex.lu Carsharing is a service offered by CFL Mobility, a company wholly owned by the CFL group – Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois.

Users only pay for the time they reserve the vehicle. They benefit from a modern vehicle that is in good working order and available immediately 24/7.

Carloh, car sharing in Luxembourg City
