The Škoda Tour: a must-see cycling event

Every year in September, Luxembourg's roads come alive with the Škoda Tour, a renowned cycling competition that attracts the world's best riders. The 2025 edition, scheduled for September 17-21, promises to be another spectacular event for cycling enthusiasts.

If you happen to see these athletes on the roads, pull over and take the time to cheer them on. Why not take the whole family to watch a stage?

Stages of the Skoda Tour in Luxembourg

The 2024 edition of the Škoda Tour de Luxembourg offered a challenging and adrenaline-filled course. The race kicked off on September 18, 2024 , in the heart of Luxembourg City, at Place Guillaume II. The finish line for this first stage was also in Luxembourg, on Rue du Marché-aux-Herbes, under the watchful eye of the race organizing committee, chaired by Andy Schleck, the famous Luxembourgish cycling champion.

The riders completed five demanding stages, including:

  • September 19: Junglinster - Schifflange
  • September 20: Rosport - Diekirch
  • September 21: Time trial in Schifflange
  • September 22: Mersch - Limpertsberg

The 2025 route has not yet been revealed. But the organizers are sure to come up with technical routes that will delight both riders and spectators alike.

The Champions of the Škoda Tour

Since its creation in 1935, the Škoda Tour de Luxembourg has seen many champions, initially mainly from Luxembourg, then from all over the world. Among the famous winners are:

  • Bernard Hinault (France) in 1982
  • Lance Armstrong (USA) in 1998

Luxembourg, a land of cycling

The Grand Duchy has always been fertile ground for cycling, both at the professional and amateur levels. Among the great figures who have marked its history, Charly Gaul, winner of the Tour de France in 1958, remains a legend. More recently, the Schleck brothers, Andy and Fränk, have also flown the flag for Luxembourg, with Andy's victory in the 2010 Tour de France.

It is worth noting that Andy Schleck has developed a bicycle business in Itzig, in the municipality of Hesperange.

Cycling is not just an elite sport in Luxembourg. It is a real culture. You only have to look at the number of bikes on the roads when the warm weather returns. It must be said that the landscapes are ideal for cycling. Every year, Luxembourg invests in cycle routes by closing certain roads for the VëloSummer operation.

Cycling events in Luxembourg

In addition to the Škoda Tour, Luxembourg hosts various cycling events throughout the year, suitable for different levels. Even amateurs can explore the picturesque roads of the Grand Duchy with cycle tours.

The Schleck Gran Fondo is undoubtedly the best known, due to the fame of its creator. This road bike race traditionally takes place in May over 160 and 90 km, starting from Mondorf les Bains. It is part of the UCI Gran Fondo World Series circuit.

The Elsy Jacobs Festival honors female cyclists from Luxembourg and around the world on the roads of Garnich, the birthplace of the famous 1958 world champion Elsy Jacobs, and Cessange in Luxembourg. These races take place in early May.

The Jean Nelissen cyclosportive race has been held since 2003, starting in Vianden and taking place at the end of May each year. The distances range from 70 to 220 km through the hilly landscapes of the north. The 220 km race has an elevation gain of 4,000 meters.
