Diversity of languages spoken in supermarkets
Shopping in a supermarket is made even easier by the fact that the staff speak several languages. All newly arrivedexpats are amazed at the staff's ability to switch easily from one language to another: Luxembourgish, French, German, English, Portuguese, etc. This is very useful when looking for a product on the shelves or at the checkout when you've forgotten something.
What's more, you'll also hear all kinds of languages spoken by the families you meet in the aisles! It's a real change of scenery! But let's not forget that Luxembourg is a multilingual country.
Free indoor or outdoor parking
Shopping is more convenient when parking is available. All supermarkets offer parking facilities in their large car parks. What's more, they are free for their customers. You can easily fill your shopping cart and empty it directly into the trunk of your car before leaving.
Supermarkets open on Sundays
Most convenience stores, supermarkets, and hypermarkets are open on Sunday mornings, generally from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Several supermarkets offer online shopping via the internet. You will find much the same products, although the choice is more limited.
You can then pick up your groceries either at the store itself or at a drive-through service. Your groceries will be loaded directly into your vehicle. You can choose between same-day or next-day delivery, at a pre-defined time slot.
Some supermarkets deliver directly to your home. Very convenient if you don't have a car!
The following retailers offer home delivery services. They also offer click & collect or drive-through services that allow you to shop online: Auchan, Naturata, Luxcaddy, Colruyt, etc. Following the acquisition of Cora by the French group Leclerc, some drive-throughservices may not be available initially.
Eco-responsibility, greener supermarkets
Supermarkets are now all committed to more environmentally friendly distribution.
Like all other stores, supermarkets have eliminated plastic bags and single-use bags. In the fruit and vegetable section, you will find washable and reusable cloth bags for purchase, or paper bags.
In addition, reusable shopping bags are available at the checkout. These sturdy eco-bags are available for less than €1. They are reusable, exchangeable for life, and recyclable. You too can help make shopping more environmentally friendly.
You will also find bulk product sections in stores for cereals, dried fruit, laundry detergent, and more. Some meat, fish, and cheese sections will also fill your personal containers with products, provided they are clean.
Supermarkets also offer local products, promoted in particular through the Slow Food movement, which is also present in Luxembourg.

Shopping in Luxembourg – an expatriate's testimony
Luxembourg has a lot in common with Germany. But when it comes to food, you immediately realize that you are on the other side of the border.
Eva – German expatriate in Luxembourg
Eva, a German expatriate in Luxembourg, shares her tips for finding typical, high-quality products in the Grand Duchy! When you move to a new country, it's important to find foods that you're used to eating and familiar products.
Culinary specialties, specific ingredients, fresh produce... Eva shares her thoughts on culinary habits in the Grand Duchy.
The diversity of food in Luxembourg
More than 47% of Luxembourg's population are foreigners, coming from over 170 different countries. This multiculturalism is reflected on the shelves of supermarkets and grocery stores.
Numerous international food brands
First of all, there is a real diversity of supermarkets in Luxembourg. Depending on their origin, they offer an infinite variety of delicious food products.
There are also many more specialty food stores from specific countries. Specialty grocery stores come from England, Portugal, Spain, Italy, the Nordic countries, and more.
A huge choice of products of all kinds
In Luxembourg, you will find a wide variety of local and international wines, as well as other spirits in your supermarkets. Luxembourg beer is not bad at all! What's more, thanks to low taxes, alcohol sold in Luxembourg is generally much cheaper than in Germany.
If you have a sweet tooth, Luxembourg will be heaven on earth for you. There are more chocolate shops and pastry shops in the Luxembourg capital than you could ever try! They offer incredible cakes, cookies, and chocolates. Forget the famous Schwarwälder Kirschtorte! Try delicious treats such as MontBlanc, tarte tatin, or Truffle Cake. And, of course, macarons! By the way, did you know that macarons are called "Luxemburgerli" in Switzerland?
Fresh, high-quality products
One of the things I like best about Luxembourg is the selection of high-quality products. Unfortunately, they are very expensive compared to Germany.
Eva – German expatriate in Luxembourg
You can find an incredible variety of fresh fish and seafood. Almost all supermarkets have their own fishmonger's. The quality is excellent. The best place to buy fish in Luxembourg is definitely the Poissonnerie Centrale, in the Gare district of Luxembourg City. It's still very expensive, but the quality is second to none.
Also try Thym Citron on Rue de Strasbourg! It's one of the best places in town to find fresh, high-quality fruit and vegetables.
Shopping in Germany is cheaper than in Luxembourg
Nevertheless, food is very expensive in Luxembourg compared to Germany. Many people go to Germany to do their weekly shopping.
They also take the opportunity to visit DM, even though the German chains Lidl and Aldi are well established in Luxembourg. Cactus stores (a Luxembourg supermarket chain) also offer many German brand food products.
The main reason I go shopping in Germany is the lack of variety in bread in Luxembourg. French baguettes are widely available, but the choice is limited.
If you like wholemeal bread and organic products, you can head to the organic sections of your supermarkets.
You will find all kinds of products there, as these sections are generally well-stocked in Luxembourg. Alternatively, there is Naturata, one of the few organic stores in Luxembourg. I think there could be more of them.
