Travel by taxi, private hire vehicle, or on-demand transportation
Whether you are an expatriate, a new resident, or a visitor to Luxembourg, it is essential to understand the individual transportation options available to you. Taxis, private hire vehicles, and other on-demand transportation services make it easy to get around the country. Here is everything you need to know to get around safely and affordably in Luxembourg.
Taking a taxi in Luxembourg
Rules to follow for Luxembourg taxis
Taxis are a convenient way to get around Luxembourg. But before you get in, it's important to know some of the rules that taxi drivers must follow.
- Taxi zone sign and other official elements: Official taxis must display a taxi zone sign visible from the outside on their windshield with the registration number and type of license. Taxis must also display a taxi sign within sight of passengers, with all the necessary information including fares, the taxi operator, the license with validity information, etc. While in service, taxis must also display their driver's card. Official taxis also have a yellow and black "TAXI" lighted sign on the roof of the vehicle.
- Pick-up and drop-off: Taxis can pick you up and drop you off anywhere you request. You can therefore hail a taxi anywhere on the street, provided you are at least 50 meters away from a taxi rank.
- To get from one place to another, the taxi must take the shortest route. If you have a preferred route, let the driver know.
- Driver obligations: A driver cannot refuse a short fare. However, they can refuse a long fare or a fare abroad. Taxi drivers can also refuse a customer who is intoxicated, under the influence of drugs, behaving inappropriately, or of questionable hygiene.
- Transportation of animals: Taxis may refuse animals, except for service dogs.

Where can you find a taxi rank in Luxembourg?
Taxi ranks are strategically located in key areas of the city. You will find them in many places, including:
- in front of Luxembourg Central Station
- Rue Notre-Dame behind the Cathedral in Luxembourg City center
- at the Glacis car park (Allée Scheffer),
- ...
Here you will find an interactive map of taxi ranks in Luxembourg City.
At taxi ranks, you are not obliged to take the first taxi in the queue. However, taxis are required to follow the order of the queue and give priority to the taxis at the front of the line.
How to book a taxi by phone or online
Want to take a taxi from your home or a specific location?
- By phone: Contact a taxi company directly
- Online: Book via the company's website. To avoid any stress before traveling by train or plane, remember to book in advance to get to the train station or Luxembourg-Findel Airport.
If you have one or more young children, please let us know in advance when booking your ride. The driver will be able to provide a suitable child car seat.
Also make sure that the vehicle is equipped to transport bulky luggage or special items such as strollers.
Transporting people with disabilities who use wheelchairs is made easier with the Adapto solution (see below).
Private hire vehicles and on-demand transport services
Since 2024, private hire vehicles (VTC) and on-demand transport services have become widely available in Luxembourg.
Private hire vehicle platforms available in Luxembourg
- WebTaxi: offered by Emile Weber, a transport specialist in Luxembourg, this service is recognizable by its white and orange taxis.
- LetzRide: LetzRide offers a 100% Luxembourgish solution. This private hire vehicle booking platform is supported by local transport companies (Sales-Lentz, Demy Schandeler, Josy Clément) via a downloadable mobile app. Journeys can be booked by car or van.
- Uber Luxembourg: Since June 2024, the Uber app has been available in Luxembourg via the company Webtaxi (Emile Weber). Prices are lower than those of traditional taxis.
- Independent drivers: Some independent drivers have a taxi license and offer customized services .
You can book a car directly with independent drivers who hold a valid taxi license.
Taxi and private hire vehicle fares in Luxembourg
Since 2016, taxi fares are no longer regulated in Luxembourg. Each driver is free to set their own prices.
- Price display: Prices must be clearly displayed outside the car, on the rear passenger side, and inside, at the front of the vehicle. Before getting into the taxi, make sure that the fares are clearly displayed. The driver must also be able to provide you with a copy of their fares on request.
- Meter: The meter must be turned on at the start of the journey. The taxi driver cannot charge you more than the price displayed. The meter will be reset to zero once the fare has been paid.
- Payment methods: The accepted payment methods must be specified. Always ask for a receipt at the end of the journey. This will serve as proof in the event of a dispute. Keep it safe.
- Approximate costs: In practical terms, taxi fares are very high in Luxembourg. Expect to pay between €22 and €45, or even more, for a 10 km journey.
On-demand transportation services such as Uber, WebTaxi, and LetzRide are generally cheaper than traditional taxi services. You can find out the prices in advance when you book the service via the app. Ride-hailing services (Uber, LetzRide) often allow you to get a price estimate in advance, making this option more predictable and often more economical.
