Relocation and administrative setup

Are you planning to move to the Grand Duchy or simply change your place of residence within Luxembourg? In addition to packing your boxes, there are many things to consider to ensure that your move goes as smoothly as possible. Here you will find our useful tips on how to best prepare for your move and settle into your new home with peace of mind!

Depending on your situation, this advice also applies if you are leaving Luxembourg.

Preparing for your move, administrative formalities

Cancel or transfer contracts related to your old home

Before moving, remember to cancel or transfer your contracts and any other utility subscriptions linked to your old home. Todo this, contact the relevant department of the service provider directly or, if this is not possible, their customer service department. They will provide you with all the information you need about canceling or transferring your contracts.

Inform your employer of your move

When you move, it is essentialto inform your employer. You must provide your new address to your company as soon as possible. In Luxembourg, the Direct Tax Administration (ACD) will update your tax withholding form, whether you are an employee or a pensioner.

Request special leave for moving

An employee who is moving is entitled to request special leave for personal reasons. In Luxembourg, this is two days. In this case, the employee is paid despite their absence.

To make this request, you will need to provide your employer with proof of your move. This can be a lease, a certificate of change of address, etc. The leave can only be taken at the time of the move. Any leave not taken is lost. Furthermore, it cannot give rise to financial compensation.

Please note that moving leave is now limited to once every three years. However, there are exceptions for moves for professional reasons.

Informing your children's schools

Schools must be informed of your move. If you have young children, they may be upset by the move. It is therefore useful to inform the teaching staff. They will then be able to manage the situation with your child in the best possible way.

Continuing at the same school

Even if you are moving within the same area and your child remains enrolled in the same school after the move, you must provide the school with your new address.

If you are a student, you must also inform your school or university if you move.

Enrolling in a new school

In Luxembourg, children are enrolled in public schools based on their parents' place of residence. This is known as the "school district." If the move means that your child will have to change schools, it is important to enroll them in the new school as soon as possible.

However, if the parents move during the school year, the child is not required to change schools, despite the school district. The child can finish the school year at the same school. Parents must, however, submit a written request to the school.

Schooling for newly arrived foreign children

Children who are new to Luxembourg are taken care of by the public services. They can receive additional support classes to help them learn the languages of instruction and integrate more quickly. Contact the relevant services to ensure that you and your child are welcomed in the best possible conditions.

Tracking your mail when you move

When you move, don't forget to arrange for your mail to be forwarded so that it doesn't end up in the mailbox of the new occupant of your former home.

To have your mail forwarded within Luxembourg, you must contact the Luxembourg Post Office. There are three ways to do this:

  • Either directly online,
  • Or by visiting a post office,
  • Or by speaking directly to the mail carrier and filling out a form.

Please note! It is important to complete the process at least three working days before the desired start date for mail forwarding. Mail can beforwarded for a minimum of seven days and a maximum of one year. However, this service is not available for parcels.

When you sign up for the mail forwarding service, the post office provides postcards so you can inform your correspondents of your change of address. There is no need to stamp them.

Newspaper forwarding is free of charge. To arrange this, contact the publisher directly to provide them with your new address.

If you are moving to Luxembourg from abroad, you will need to submit a request directly to the post office in your country of departure. Remember to do this well in advance so that the service is effective as soon as you leave.

Renting a moving van

Instead of hiring movers, you can rent a van and take care of the move yourself. There are many vehicle rental agencies in Luxembourg, including Ada, Intralux, Vicente, Autorent, and Stroll Trucks.

Request to occupy public roads

To make your move to Luxembourg easier, you must apply for a permit to occupy public roads. This will allow you to park your moving truck in front of your building or house without obstructing the public road.

Moving in Luxembourg City

The application for authorization to occupy public roads in the capital can be made directly online. You must apply for authorization from the Luxembourg City Traffic Department at least five working days before the date of the move. No parking signs willbe put in place at least 24 hours before the authorization is issued.

The request to reserve the public highway must be made in advance. Please note that there is a charge for this. The rate depends on the removal vehicles used and the area.

If the applicant does not comply with the conditions of the authorization, the City of Luxembourg is entitled to withdraw the authorization. This withdrawal takes effect immediately. No refund or compensation can be granted.

Moving to other cities or towns in Luxembourg

Residents of other towns in the country who wish to move must contact their local transport department directly.

Our advice for your moving boxes

When packing your moving boxes, remember to group the different items in the boxes by destination room. Clearly indicate on each box (top and side) which room it is intended for. This will make the movers' job easier and, above all, yours when it comes to unpacking the boxes.

Also clearly mark boxes containing fragile items. Be careful not to overload the boxes (especially with books).

Administrative procedures to complete on moving day

On moving day, remember to:

Formalities to complete after moving to Luxembourg

Declaration of arrival in your municipality of residence

Anyone who moves to Luxembourg must declare their arrival to their municipality of residence. If you are a European citizen, you have eight days from your arrival in the country to do so. Please note that this period is reduced to three days for non-European Union citizens.

Waste collection and ordering trash cans

Waste sorting is relatively well developed in Luxembourg. When you move in, ask your municipality about the different types of waste bins. If you have your own home, you can choose different bins depending on the type of waste. You can also ask the municipality's sanitation department for specific bags for recyclable waste.

Administrative procedures for driving a private car in Luxembourg

When you move to Luxembourg, you must register your new address on Part I of your vehicle registration certificate. You have one month to do this.

This change of address is carried out by the SNCA. This procedure is free of charge if the owner's address is listed in the national register of individuals and legal entities. If this is not the case, you will need to provide proof of legal residence in Luxembourg in order to register. See the administrative formalities to be completed for your vehicle in Luxembourg.

If you are arriving from another country, you may need to exchange your driver's license for a Luxembourg license.

Free parking in Luxembourg as a resident

In order to park for free in your neighborhood, particularly in Luxembourg City and other major cities in the country, you will need to apply for a special parking sticker from your local municipal authority. This will allow you to park for free in your neighborhood. Otherwise, you will have to pay parking fees.

Owning a dog or pet in Luxembourg

In Luxembourg, dogs must be registered by their owners with the local authority where they live. To register your dog with the local authority, you will need to present a veterinary certificate and an insurance policy from a company approved in Luxembourg.

Please note that owners of pets in Luxembourg, such as dogs, cats, ferrets, etc., must comply with the regulations relating to pets.

Identity documents and new address

If you change your address, Luxembourg residents must renew their identity card. Your home address information must be updated. Contact your new local authority for more information.
