Mental distress and suicide prevention in Luxembourg
Terrifying statistics
Mental health is a major issue in Luxembourg, where suicide remains a cause for concern. According to the latest figures, the suicide rate in 2019 was 11.3 per 100,000 inhabitants. In 2022, it was estimated that between 70 and 80 people take their own lives each year in Luxembourg. Even more alarming is the fact that suicide attempts are estimated to be between 10 and 20 times higher than the recorded suicide figures.
Young people are particularly vulnerable. Forty-four adolescents committed suicide between 1998 and 2021. At the same time, in 2021, CEPAS, the Center for Psychosocial and Educational Support (Cepas), reported a 15% increase in suicidal thoughts among adolescents. In 2022, around 100 young people were admitted to emergency rooms for suicidal thoughts or attempts.
Suicide prevention measures
Faced with this frightening reality, Luxembourg is implementing prevention measures. The National Suicide Prevention Plan aims to strengthen support for people in distress and improve access to care. Helplines, psychological support structures, and school initiatives play a key role in raising awareness and helping at-risk populations.
That is why it is essential to break the taboo surrounding mental distress and encourage everyone to seek help. Resources are available to support those in distress and prevent tragedies. Together, we can take action to protect everyone's mental health.
