Telephone, internet, television, and delivery services

Welcome to Luxembourg! As a new expatriate, one of your first priorities will be to familiarize yourself with Luxembourg's telecommunications services so you can stay connected.

Not sure which operator(s) to choose for your phone, internet, and television? Here is some information to help you choose your landline and mobile phone, television, and internet service provider in Luxembourg.

Luxembourg, a hub for telecommunications companies

Luxembourg has become a hub for international telecommunications companies. Thanks to its modern infrastructure and advanced connectivity, it attracts many companies, including SES, a global leader in satellite communications.

Mobile telephony in Luxembourg

Mobile telephony in Luxembourg is reliable and has extensive coverage, even in the north of the country.

Mobile phone operators in Luxembourg

There are five mobile phone operators in Luxembourg. Each offers several packages tailored to users' needs, with varying degrees of coverage and power.

The packages on offer are tailored to all needs and budgets. Don't forget to check out the exclusive offers targeted at expats to maximize your connection capacity at attractive rates.

Mobile phone offers can be combined with landline, unlimited internet, and television services, or more basic services for limited use.

There are several telecommunications and mobile phone operators in Luxembourg:

  • Eltrona: Eltrona is a pioneer in Luxembourg's cable networks and has its own network for installing its services. Eltrona offers a wide range of mobile phone, internet, and TV services.
  • Post offers numerous services in its branches: postal services (mail and parcels), landline and mobile phone plans, internet services, TV, and even banking services. Post is one of the largest employers in Luxembourg.
  • Orange Luxembourg: Renowned for the quality of its fiber optic and 5G network, Orange Luxembourg has been operating in the Grand Duchy for 15 years.
  • Tango: Part of the Belgian Proximus group, Tango offers a number of plans, with or without mobile phones.
  • Luxembourg Online is a 100% Luxembourgish telephone company that has been in existence for over 25 years. It is the oldest player in this telephone market. It can be found on the website internet.lu.

Whichever operator you choose, simply visit a representative agency to sign up for a mobile plan and purchase a new mobile phone. To do so, bring proof of identity, proof of address, and your bank details.

Mobile phone plans in Luxembourg

By comparing the different offers, you are sure to find the plan that suits you best. You can then equip yourself with tailor-made telecommunications offers and advantageous conditions, whatever your communication needs.

Depending on your needs, you can opt for a plan with unlimited calls for €10 per month, with a few GB of data included. However, for a complete unlimited phone and data experience, expect to pay €60 per month.

It is important to note that roaming charges were abolished in 2017. As a result, bills have become lighter, especially for travelers outside Luxembourg. Calls received abroad or made from abroad on your Luxembourg mobile phone are no longer charged extra in Europe.

Should you opt for 4G or 5G in Luxembourg?

With 5G, the mobile phone landscape is undergoing a real revolution in Luxembourg. Download speeds are multiplied (x20) and latency times are significantly reduced. 5G undeniably provides a more efficient smartphone experience and a more complete user experience.

However, some operators are more advanced than others in the field of 5G. So should you opt for 5G or not?

It is important to note that the maximum speed currently available is only 1 Gbit/second. Not all operators are able to achieve this.

Furthermore, 5G coverage is not evenly distributed across the country. Of course, the capital city of Luxembourg currently has the best coverage. If you live and/or work in Luxembourg, 5G may be very interesting for you. The same applies if you live and/or work in the south of the country, particularly around Esch-sur-Alzette.

On the other hand, 5G coverage is more unpredictable in the rest of the country, particularly in the north. Even 4G is sometimes difficult to obtain.

Nevertheless, you should be able to surf the web with ease and, in particular, follow all the media on your mobile or desktop.

Disappearance of landline telephony in the Grand Duchy

Traditional landline telephony disappeared in 2024. All analog telephone lines have migrated to IP telephony via the Internet.

Internet connection, broadband access, and Wi-Fi at home

Luxembourg stands out for its first-rate internet performance. With a high-end infrastructure, internet providers guarantee a reliable and fast connection. Whether you work from home, stream videos, or participate in video conferences, fiber optics and broadband connections ensure a smooth online experience.

Today, many companies in Luxembourg encourage teleworking.

Telecom networks for internet connections

Subscribing to the right telecom network is essential when living abroad. Having access to high-performance telecommunications means you can stay in touch with family and friends back home. This helps reduce the sense of loss of bearings that can come with living abroad. Isolation is often a problem for expatriates.

That's why it's so important to stay in touch with family and friends, as we've all realized during lockdowns.

To ensure smooth internet access, especially when several people in the family are connected, we recommend opting for fiber optics if possible. Although fiber optics are becoming more widespread in Luxembourg, they are not yet available everywhere . You can check with your internet service provider for more information.

Internet providers in Luxembourg

The main internet providers in Luxembourg guarantee high-speed internet access via ADSL connections. These include Eltrona, Post, Tango, Orange, and Luxembourg Online.

They will offer to install a modem and Wi-Fi so you can enjoy wireless internet throughout your home. The speeds offered generally range from 1,000 Mb/s download speeds, which allows for good internet use with streaming or video calls.

An internet subscription costs around €60 per month in Luxembourg.

Internet connections

When you arrive in Luxembourg, it is common to have to wait a few days or even a few weeks to get a suitable telephone and internet connection that meets your needs.

Post is the main telecom operator, managing lines and networks throughout the country, with the exception of the Eltrona network, which has its own infrastructure. Post must therefore intervene in advance to open the line if you choose a different operator. Appointments can be made up to one month in advance.
Appointments with Post will be made directly by your chosen provider. You don't have to do anything. Once Post has completed the installation, the operator can then intervene.

Tip: regardless of the operator you choose, request the connection as early as possible as it takes time!

Fiber optics for a better telecom experience

Why choose fiber optics in Luxembourg?

When it comes to telecommunications, fiber optics are becoming increasingly widespread in Luxembourg. Municipalities are now better equipped with fiber optic networks.

Communicating easily with loved ones via all types of media, surfing the web, playing games, or streaming music is up to 10 times faster with fiber optics than with standard ADSL. What's more, download volumes can be unlimited, or almost unlimited.

The connection is perfect for digital applications such as Skype for communicating with loved ones or streaming (on demand) movies and music.

Furthermore, the increasing quality of video games in terms of graphics and technical complexity, as well as the possibility of playing online, are important factors in the switch to fiber optics.
As for teleworking, it virtually requires a fiber optic connection.

Cost of fiber optics in Luxembourg

In terms of price, fiber optics has become very affordable when you consider the level of comfort it provides.

However, the costs of installing fiber optics are not always very clear in service providers' offers. The bill may be higher if your building or house is not connected. Check with the building manager or the previous occupant of your home. Find out in advance whether your telecom installation is eligible and under what conditions the installation can be carried out. And switch to fiber to enjoy faster, higher-quality connections.

Television in Luxembourg

In Luxembourg, a variety of international and local channels are available, accessible via the internet or satellite installation. Serviceproviders such as POST Luxembourg TV offer packages to suit all tastes, whether you're interested in series, films, sports, or documentaries. Opt for multilingual packages for an immersive experience that reflects Luxembourg's cultural diversity.

You can opt for IPTV (Internet Protocol Television). However, please note that fiber optics are required to enjoy this service.

IPTV is an alternative to cable or satellite TV. Internet + TV packages cost around €70-80 per month in Luxembourg. There may be additional costs for decoder rental and installation. Find out in advance. Also check the number of channels offered, usually around a hundred, as well as the possibility of recording programs.

If you do not wish to opt for Internet TV, you can always install a satellite dish. This will allow you to receive all channels, including those from your country of origin.

Free WiFi in Luxembourg cities

Surf the web at high speed and low cost with the free Wi-Fi networks that are popping up in Luxembourg cities: Luxembourg, Esch-sur-Alzette, Strassen, Dudelange, and others.

Wi-Fi networks are now available in several cities across the country. Feel free to connect to Wi-Fi networks such as hotcity, citywifi, cityluxfree, etc. This will give you free internet access in most major transit areas, without a password, for a limited time or without a time limit thanks to a premium connection at a reduced rate. This initiative has already made life easier for thousands of users in Luxembourg! The speed may be quite slow, but it can be a useful backup when needed.

Although Luxembourg City appears to be well equipped in terms of internet coverage, the large number of people using it reduces its performance. Large cities in the south such as Differdange, Dudelange, and Esch-sur-Alzette offer better connections. Ettelbruck in the north also appears to be well ranked.

Sending and delivering parcels in Luxembourg and abroad

Delivering parcels from abroad is not always easy in Luxembourg. In fact, the Grand Duchy is relatively underserved by online retailers, unless the supplier already operates in Belgium.

Consider using Post's PackUp Import service. This also allows you to collect your parcels from secure, reserved areas that are accessible 24/7. Post also offers parcel delivery to your home, to a location agreed in advance.

With Post, you can also send your parcels anywhere in Luxembourg and internationally.

You can also consider the Mondial Relay network, which is growing rapidly in Luxembourg, or a concierge service.
